Policy Advocacy
IWILAP researches issues impacting Muslim women’s rights, collects data on prevalence rates of discrimination and violence, and advocates for policy reforms at local, national, and international levels. This includes collaborating with policymakers, academics, and other stakeholders to develop evidence-based solutions and legislative reforms.
Strategic Litigation Unit
The goal of the unit is to advance women’s rights and gender equality within Muslim communities through targeted legal advocacy and systemic change. By strategically selecting and litigating cases, the unit aims to establish legal precedents that protect and advance Muslim women’s rights. These precedents serve as benchmarks for future legal challenges and contribute to the development of progressive interpretations of Islamic law and jurisprudence that prioritize gender equality and justice.
The Strategic Litigation Unit, based in Kampala has achieved notable successes since its inception in 2013. The unit focuses much of its attention in ensuring just administrative action for indigent persons and communities. The unit is headed by counsel Haurah Nalubega who, along with a group of dedicated attorneys and advocates, conducts most of the litigation work. The services of outside counsel are engaged when necessary.
