Gender-Based Violence
Advocacy against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Muslim communities is crucial for promoting gender equality, protecting women’s rights, and creating safer and more supportive environments for survivors. Societally ingrained marginalization of Muslim women breeds violence: abuse, rape, forced disappearance, and murder. Too often these crimes are not even investigated, perpetuating the horrific cycle. IWILAP collaborates with local and international partners around the world to hold perpetrators accountable for their inaction, working tirelessly to set new legal precedents to advance human rights.
IWILAP has several other key strategies for conducting effective advocacy against GBV in Muslim communities; the major one being the Free Her Campaign project.
IWILAP Advocates for legal reforms to strengthen protections for survivors of GBV and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions. This includes include lobbying for the enactment or amendment of laws addressing domestic violence, marital rape, and other forms of GBV, as well as ensuring effective enforcement of existing laws.
IWILAP works to address cultural norms and beliefs while challenging cultural norms, patriarchal attitudes, and misconceptions that contribute to the perpetuation of GBV within Muslim communities. IWILAP endeavors to provide education and training to religious leaders, community influencers, and educators to promote gender-sensitive interpretations of religious teachings and challenge harmful gender stereotypes.
